Blueberries are really naturally blue and are native to North America with Michigan being the number one producer in the US. They are so popular they have two days dedicated to them, National Blueberry Pie Day on April 28 and National Blueberry Muffin Day July 11! Blueberries have so many good nutrients and are so low in calories they are the perfect food to eat to maintain your weight. There are so any health benefits from eating blueberries that you will want to have a handful everyday.
Believe it or not they are great for our bones and joints. The iron, zinc, and vitamin k improve calcium absorption. Blueberries lower blood pressure and are a heart health fruit. Blueberries have fiber, B6, folate with no cholesterol blueberries are excellent for the prevention of heart disease.
The anthocyanins that make the blueberries blue are a powerhouse in protecting cells against free radical damage which means they help fight cancer. Not only do blueberries fight and ward of certain types of cancer, the folate in the blueberries helps the DNA in our bodies repair or stop the formation of cancer cells from mutating in the DNA, WOW!
Another plus, especially for us ladies are blueberries actually help fight wrinkles. The vitamin C helps fight damage from the sun and promote collagen production. One more advantage to eating blueberries are they help our mental health and reduce cognitive decline. Researchers are now looking into blueberries to help protect against Alzheimer’s disease.
A fun fact about blueberries is don’t scrub off the white power dust you see on them! That means they are fresh, washing it off makes them soggy and soft.
